Speed camera car targeted in road rage incident

A mobile speed camera vehicle has been damaged in a targeted attack in Melbourne’s north.

An unmarked speed camera car has been rammed multiple times in Wollert, in Melbourne’s outer north.

Victoria Police say the Toyota Kluger was smashed into by an older Nissan Navara single-cab ute with a tray, described as being black or dark grey.

The attack occurred alongside Craigieburn Road East at 1:40am on Monday 13 June 2022.

While the camera operator was reportedly uninjured, police say the Kluger sustained “significant damage” and was towed from the scene.

Smash repairers are being asked to keep a lookout for a Navara matching the description, with fresh damage to the front end.

Police have released a low-resolution image of a man who was a passenger in the Navara at the time, and who may have been recording the event on his phone.

It’s not the first time an incident like this has occurred. In June 2019, a speed camera car was rammed in Bacchus Marsh, pushing the vehicle 30 metres into a tree and injuring the operator.

This latest incident comes a month after a man allegedly smashed the wing mirror off a speed camera car with a metal rod in St Leonards near Geelong, after emerging from nearby bushland, while also placing nail boards on a front tyre to prevent an escape.

In Victoria, covert speed camera cars owned and managed by contractors are often parked by the roadside, without any warning to drivers as is a requirement in other states. They help to bring in more than $300 million in fines annually.

Greensborough Highway Patrol are appealing for anyone who witnessed this most recent attack in Wollert to come forward, or to contact Crime Stoppers on 1300 333 000.
